Current Series: Name
Speaker: John Stallsmith
What is a name? Names were your identity in the Old Testament. Your status in society hinged on whose family name you carried. The name set you apart. each name was loaded with meaning. Someone's name told you who they were, what they were about, and what they stood for. Your name was your identification.
In the English language there are really only two common names we use for God: God and LORD. Those two names can be countless times throughout the Old and New Testaments, but because the Hebrew language is loaded with meaning, and it's so hard to find accurate translations in English, we tend to lose the meaning of God's name. In the Hebrew there are so many more names for God than we can describe in English. El Shaddai. Jehovah Nissi. Jehovah Jireh. Adonai. Jehovah Shalom. Elohim. All these names describe him as God, but also describe his character. God's names show his attributes.
We want to explore the names of God, not just what they mean, but find out what God is really about. To find out who God really is. To find the true character of God.
